José Acacio de Barros is Professor of Philosophy and Director of the School of Liberal Studies at San Francisco State University. His research is broadly interdisciplinary, spanning the foundations and philosophy of physics, probability and contextuality, mathematical psychology and quantum cognition, neural oscillators and pattern recognition, and physics education.

A recurring theme in his work is the use of mathematical and conceptual tools from physics to investigate questions that extend beyond traditional disciplinary boundaries. His research has included quantum cosmology and the foundations of quantum mechanics; negative probabilities and contextuality; neural models of cognition and decision-making; oscillator-based models of learning and pattern recognition; and collaborative and interactive approaches to physics education. His work has appeared in journals across philosophy, physics, neuroscience, mathematical psychology, neural networks, and science education.

He earned his Ph.D. in Physics from CBPF in 1991. His dissertation was supervised by Francisco Antonio Doria and Newton da Costa, while Antonio Fernandes da Fonseca Teixeira was formally listed as co-adviser. Before joining San Francisco State University, he held research and visiting appointments at Stanford University. He is also a corresponding member of the Brazilian Academy of Philosophy.
