Dr. de la Torre's research focuses on understanding the physiology, ecology and evolution of microorganisms involved in driving the global Nitrogen cycle. The de la Torre lab is particularly focused on studying the pathways for energy production in ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA), the genomics of thermophilic AOA from around the world and how interactions between AOA and nitrogen-fixing microorganisms drive the composition of microbial communities in extreme environments (e.g. in hot springs in Yellowstone National Park).
