About Jane Veeder

Jane Veeder started her career in electronic media arts in 1976 as a video artist and began working with digital computers in 1978. A member of the pioneering Chicago computer graphics community in the early 1980’s, she has produced internationally exhibited animated and interactive computer artworks and in industry designed user interfaces for graphics software development. She taught at the Pacific North West College of Art (1984-85) and has been at SF State since 1988.
Her 1982 animated MONTANA was included in the NYMOMA inaugural video collection, in 1984 her interactive self-portrait game,WARPITOUT, went on permanent exhibit at the Ontario Science Center,and in 1985 Ars Electronica commissioned 4KTAPE. A longtime SIGGRAPH volunteer, she chaired a panel on computer animation in 1992 and two 1995 panels on the videogame industry,and spoke on a 1997 panel on Educating Animators for Entertainment. She has given many talks, including two talks at NYMOMA, in 1986 on computer art and again in 1996, on The Digital Artist and Current Tool Development Trends and presented computer animated JG3D.
Since 1988, Jane has taught 3D computer animation, interactive multimedia, design of virtual worlds, and motion graphics at San Francisco State University. In 1998 she joined the Department of Design and Industry’s (DAI) new Visual Communication Design program where she coordinates the digital media curriculum. In 2001, she designed and built the new 3SPACE Lab for computer animation,product design, and virtual worlds.
She was the department chair of DAI 2012-2015 and in that role, made DAI the first laptop required SFSU program, launched a new Design Gallery initiative, due to open in fall, 2016, and a fundraising project to create a Design Gallery Endowment to support visiting designers, travelling exhibits, gallery operations. In addition, expanded DAI technical staff and supported expansion of the Industrial Design Rapid Prototype Lab, updating the woodworking shop, and upgrading Visual Communication Design classroom presentation technology.
