Bio:

Masahiko Minami, who received his doctorate from Harvard University, is Professor at San Francisco State University, where he specializes in Japanese language and cross-cultural studies. He also served as an Invited Professor at the National Institute for Japanese Language and Linguistics based in Tokyo (2012–2016), where he edited the Handbook of Japanese Applied Linguistics in the Handbooks of Japanese Language and Linguistics series. Dr. Minami is currently Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Japanese Linguistics (De Gruyter Mouton) and Assciate Editor of Narrative Inquiry (John Benjamins). His primary area of interest in research is bilingual education and cross-cultural studies. He has written extensively on psycho/sociolinguistics with a particular emphasis on cross-cultural comparisons of language development and narrative/discourse structure. His major works in English include Language Issues in Literacy and Bilingual/Multicultural Education (Harvard Educational Review, 1991), Culture-specific Language Styles: The Development of Oral Narrative and Literacy (Multilingual Matters, 2002), Applying Theory and Research to Learning Japanese as a Foreign Language (Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2007), Telling Stories in Two Languages: Multiple Approaches to Understanding English-Japanese Bilingual Children’s Narratives (Information Age Publishing, 2011), and the Handbook of Japanese Applied Linguistics (De Gruyter Mouton, 2016). His major works in Japanese include Language and Culture: Understanding Language Variations from the Viewpoint of Linguistic Theories (Kurosio Publishers, 2009) and Socially Oriented Linguistics (Kurosio Publishers, 2017). Dr. Minami currently serves as the Omicron Chapter President of Phi Beta Kappa, the oldest honor society in the United States. He is one of the four Teaching Excellent Laurietes of 2007 selected by the Northern California Association of Phi Beta Kappa.

 

大阪教育附属高等学校天王寺校舎を経て京都大学経済学部を卒業。京都大学文学部に学士入学し、米文学科専攻卒業後、高等学校勤務を経て、ハーバード大学 教育大学院・人間発達と心理学研究科で博士号を取得。現在は、サンフランシスコ州立大学人文学部教授。学術誌Journal of Japanese Linguistics主幹。国立国語研究所客員教授、北カリフォルニア外国語協会(Foreign Language Association of Northern California)会長、全米日本語教育学会(American Association of Teachers of Japanese)理事・春期年次学会担当役員、北カリフォルニア日本語教師会(Northern California Japanese Teachers Association)会長、北加日米会(Japanese American Association of Northern California)第一副会長、金門学園(継承言語学校)理事・園長など、要職を歴任。著作は、『社会志向の言語学豊富な実例と実証研究から学ぶ』『言語と文化—言語学から読み解くことばのバリエーション』『文化と心理学—比較文化心理学入 門』『ヨウチエン』『言語学と日本語教育: New Directions in Applied Linguistics of Japanese (II, III, IV, VVI』『Handbook of Japanese Applied Linguistics』『Telling Stories in Two Languages: Multiple Approaches to Understanding English-Japanese Bilingual Children’s Narratives』『Culture-Specific Language Styles: The Development of Oral Narrative and Literacy』『Language Issues in Literacy and Bilingual/Multicultural Education』など多数。成績優秀な大学生・卒業生から成る米国最古(1776年設立)で最も有名なギリシャ文字クラブ『ファイ・ベータ・カッパ ソサイエティ(Phi Beta Kappa Society)』が選出した『2007年度北カリフォルニア最優秀大学教員』4人のうちの一人である。
