About Yang Xiao-Desai

Dr. Yang Xiao-Desai is Associate Professor of Chinese in the Department of Modern Languages & Literatures. Prior to joining San Francisco State University in 2014, she taught in University of South Carolina, University of California, Davis, Middlebury College (Summer Chinese School), University of Hawaii, as well as Xiamen University in China.
Dr. Yang Xiao-Desai received her Ph. D. from University of Hawaii at Manoa. Her main areas of research are in second language acquisition, heritage language education, and Chinese sociolinguistics. She is particularly interested in individual differences of language learners, such as anxiety, identity, willingness to communicate, and learning strategies. She also studies the role of technology in language learning and teacher training. Currently she is working on search behaviors of online language learners, as well as the development of Chinese as a heritage language. Her specialty also includes Chinese language program development and curriculum design.
