Joel Schechter is Emeritus Professor of Theatre and Dance at San Francisco State University, where he taught courses in theatre history, dramatic literature, dramaturgy, playwriting and popular theatre from 1992 to 2019.  He also served as Chair of Theatre Arts for six years,  as coordinator of the M.A. Theatre Arts program, and directed plays by Bertolt Brecht, Sholem Aleichem, John Gay, Joseph Brodsky, and others.   Prior to teaching at SFSU, he served for fifteen years as Editor of Theater, a journal at Yale School of Drama, where he also taught dramatic literature courses and worked as a Yale Rep dramaturg.  He also was on the faculty at the New School for Social Research (New York) and the State University of New York at Stony Brook, and a guest lecturer in NYU's Performance Studies program.

Titles of books published include: Durov's Pig;  Satiric Impersonations;  The Congress of Clowns;  Radical Yiddish,  Messiahs of 1933; Eighteenth-Century Brechtians; and Satire (due out in August of 2021).
