Sara Marinelli grew up in Italy, where she received a B.A. in Foreign Languages and Literatures (English and Russian) from the University of Naples, "L'Orientale," and a PhD in Literatures in English from the University of Rome, "La Sapienza." After completing a post-doctoral fellowship at UC Santa Cruz, in 2007, Sara decided to make the Bay Area her home. Here, she began to write fiction, and, in 2013, she completed an MFA in Creative Writing at San Francisco State University. She is author of several academic publications in Italy, and is currently working on a novel.

Her main academic interests are women's writing and post-colonial literature and theory. At SFSU, she teaches HUM 220: Values and Culture, and HUM 375: Biography of a City, (Rome and Naples, her native city).

Every month, she co-curates and co-hosts and all-women literary reading series in San Francisco, Hazel Reading Series.
