China in 2010: Legacies of the Past, Prospects for the Future
by Jeffrey Wasserstrom

This illustrated talk, by an academic China specialist who also writes regularly for newspapers and magazines, will explore recent changes in Chinese politics and culture and the shifting place of the PRC in the global order.  Drawing on material from the presenter's forthcoming book, /China in the 21st Century: What Everyone Needs to Know/ (to be published by Oxford on April 14) and on experiences he has had during his frequent trips to Asia, the speaker will deal with topics such as: changing patterns of protest in Chinese cities, the impact and meaning of the Beijing Olympics and the 2010 Shanghai Expo, the shifting role of the Internet as a factor in society and politics, and American hopes for and fears of China from the days of the Boxers to the present.  The talk will be informed by historical perspective but zero in on issues of the moment, at a time when China's impact on and engagement with the world is increasing dramatically and relations between Beijing and Washington are growing more and more complex.
